How to Adapt Your Spray Tan Service for Autumn Skin

How to Adapt Your Spray Tan Service for Autumn Skin

, by Lynsey Bennett, 2 min reading time

As we move into September, your clients’ skin can start to behave differently. Cooler temperatures, central heating and less humidity can all contribute to skin feeling drier - and that can have an impact on how a spray tan applies, develops and fades.

For spray tan artists, now is the perfect time to start adjusting your client advice and technique for the new season.

1. Pay Extra Attention to Dry Areas

Elbows, knees, ankles, hands and feet can become noticeably drier as the weather changes. These areas can grab onto tan more easily, creating a darker or uneven finish.

Use barrier cream where needed and take extra care with your application around particularly dry areas.

2. Make Hydration Part of the Prep

Beautiful spray tan results start before your client steps into the tanning tent.

Encourage clients to keep their skin well moisturised in the days leading up to their appointment, while avoiding heavy moisturisers immediately before their spray tan unless advised otherwise.

Well-prepped, hydrated skin can help create a smoother-looking result and a more even fade.

3. Don't Automatically Reach for a Darker Shade

As summer tans begin to fade, your client's natural skin tone may change too.

Rather than simply using the shade they wore throughout summer, reassess their skin tone at every appointment. A slightly lighter solution or different undertone may create a much more natural result going into autumn.

Consult the skin you see today - not the shade they had in July.

4. Adjust Your Technique to the Client

If a client is particularly dry, more solution isn't necessarily the answer. Over-application can leave dry areas looking heavier and may affect how evenly the tan fades.

A controlled, even application with careful blending around the hands, feet, wrists and ankles will help create that seamless Lusso finish.

5. Update Your Aftercare Advice

Autumn is the perfect time to remind clients that their spray tan appointment is only part of the process.

Encourage regular moisturising and gentle skincare to help maintain an even-looking tan. You can also recommend a gradual tanner between appointments to top up colour as their spray tan naturally fades.

The Seasonal Consultation Matters

A luxury spray tan service should never feel like the exact same appointment every time.

Skin changes. Seasons change. Your client's desired result changes.

Taking a few extra minutes to assess their skin and adjust your solution, application and aftercare advice accordingly can make all the difference.

Great spray tanning isn't just about applying colour - it's about understanding the skin you're applying it to.
