Spray Tan Prep Guide - The 24-Hour Formula for Perfect Results

Spray Tan Prep Guide - The 24-Hour Formula for Perfect Results

, by Lynsey Bennett, 5 min reading time

A professional spray tan starts before the gun ever turns on. Learn the 24-hour prep routine that guarantees flawless, long-lasting results every time.

Every flawless spray tan starts long before the first spray. Preparation is the single biggest factor that separates a glowing, even tan from a streaky disaster. As a professional artist, you control 50% of the result - the other 50% lies in how your client prepares. This 24-hour prep formula is what every client should follow for consistent, golden results.

1. 24 Hours Before - Exfoliation Is Non-Negotiable

Dead skin is your worst enemy. If a client arrives without exfoliating, you’ll spray over
uneven texture, which causes patchiness and early fading. The golden rule: exfoliate the day before, not the day of.

Your client should use a glycolic or AHA-based exfoliator (not a scrub with oils) to remove dry skin and any old tan. Oils leave residue that blocks DHA absorption, creating light spots and uneven colour.

Pro Tip: recommend your own pre-tan exfoliating mitt or prep solution for consistency.

2. 12 Hours Before - Shave, Don’t Strip

Hair removal should happen 1224 hours before tanning. Shaving too close to the
appointment leaves micro-cuts that react with DHA and cause dark dots or irritation.

If waxing, leave at least 24 hours before tanning to allow pores to close. The same goes for laser treatments - DHA on freshly treated skin is a recipe for sensitivity.

3. The Morning Of - Go Bare, Stay Dry

The skin should be clean, dry, and product-free. That means:

- No deodorant.

- No makeup.

- No perfume or lotion.

These all act as barriers that block the tan. Worse, deodorant can react with bronzers and turn the underarm area green - one of the most common rookie mistakes.

Pro Tip: keep baby wipes or micellar water in your salon so clients can wipe down quickly
before their session.

4. Dress for Success

What your client wears to the appointment matters. Loose, dark clothing and flip-flops or
slides only. Tight leggings, sports bras, or jeans will rub and create marks before development even starts.

Also: no jewellery, no watches, no socks. The cleaner and looser the fit, the better the
outcome.

5. Hydration Makes or Breaks It

Hydrated skin = even absorption. Dehydrated skin = streaks and fast fade. Encourage clients to hydrate from the inside (water intake) and the outside (daily lotion in the days leading up to their tan).

But make it clear: no lotion the day of. Moisturise *before* the 24-hour window, not during it.

6. Bonus: The Night Before Checklist

Give clients a short, easy checklist to follow - simplicity means compliance. Example:

- Exfoliate with Lusso Pre-Tan Exfoliator.

- Shave or wax 1224 hours before.

- Skip lotions, deodorant, and perfume.

- Pack loose, dark clothes for your appointment.

- Bring a hair tie, wipes, and a smile.

It sounds basic, but 90% of client errors come from overthinking or skipping small steps.

7. As a Professional: Set Standards, Not Suggestions

The best artists don’t just tell clients how to prep - they systemize it. Send a prep email or text 24 hours before each appointment. Include a link or QR code to your digital prep guide.

This creates consistency, saves time repeating instructions, and builds authority. Clients
trust professionals who have processes.

Spray tan prep isn’t an optional step - it’s 50% of the result. Educate, automate, and
enforce it. When every client follows this 24-hour formula, your results become predictable, your reviews improve, and your rebookings skyrocket.
