A flawless spray tan is only as good as its aftercare. You can deliver the perfect application, but if your client ignores maintenance, it will fade unevenly, crack, or disappear in days. As professionals, we’re not just applying colour - we’re protecting the skin’s condition so the tan lasts beautifully. Here’s the ultimate spray tan aftercare system that keeps clients glowing for a full 7–10 days.
1. The First 24 Hours - Set the Foundation
The first day after application determines how the tan develops.
Clients must:
Pro Tip: Tell clients to skip body wash for the first rinse - just water. This allows DHA to finish developing without interference.
2. Gentle Cleansing Only
Harsh soaps strip tan faster than anything. Recommend a pH-balanced, sulphate-free body wash - ideally one you retail. No exfoliating gloves, no loofahs, and absolutely no alcohol-based shower gels. The goal is to maintain the acid mantle of the skin so DHA stays intact longer.
3. Hydration = Longevity
Hydration is the difference between a 3-day tan and a 10-day tan. Clients should moisturise daily using an alcohol-free, oil-free lotion. Look for ingredients like shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera - these keep skin plump without breaking down DHA.
Avoid mineral oils - they dissolve the tan barrier and cause patchy fade.
4. Avoid These Tan Killers
Educate clients on what destroys a tan:
It’s not about restriction - it’s about preservation. One gym session in tight leggings can undo a perfect leg tan.
5. Fade Gracefully, Don’t Flake
At day 5–6, the tan begins to fade. The best way to maintain an even tone is controlled exfoliation and gradual reapplication. Have your clients use a gentle exfoliating mitt and top up with a gradual tanning lotion. This refreshes colour while preventing patchy build-up.
6. Retail = Retention
Selling aftercare isn’t about upselling - it’s about protecting results. When your client uses the right products, they stay happy, loyal, and glowing. Build an aftercare bundle: body wash, lotion, and gradual tan. Sell it as part of the experience, not an add-on.
7. Your Language Matters
Don’t say ‘make sure you’ - say ‘to protect your results.’ Shift from instruction to partnership. Clients follow rules when they understand why. The more educated your clients, the fewer complaints you’ll handle.
Aftercare is the unsung hero of every great spray tan. Teach it, systemize it, and reinforce it every session. When clients follow your method, your tans look flawless longer - and your reputation grows with every glow.
