Why Your Spray Tan Gun Settings Matter More Than You Think

Why Your Spray Tan Gun Settings Matter More Than You Think

You can have a great professional spray tan solution, perfectly prepped skin and an experienced artist - but if your spray gun isn't set correctly, your finished result can still suffer.

Your spray tan gun settings control how much solution reaches the skin and how evenly it's distributed.

And sometimes, when an artist thinks they have a solution problem, they actually have an equipment or application problem.

What Should a Good Spray Pattern Look Like?

Before your first client, it's worth checking your spray pattern.

You want controlled, even coverage rather than large droplets, inconsistent patches or excessive mist.

If your spray pattern suddenly looks different from normal, don't automatically compensate by spraying more product.

Check your equipment first.

More Solution Doesn't Mean More Colour

One of the easiest mistakes to make is assuming that increasing the flow will create a darker tan.

It doesn't necessarily work that way.

Your professional solution is formulated to create a particular result. Oversaturating the skin can waste product and make controlled, even application more difficult.

If your client wants a deeper result, your solution choice should do the work — not excessive application.

Distance Matters

How far you hold your spray gun from the client's body can change the application.

Too close and you risk concentrating too much solution onto a smaller area.

Too far away and you may create unnecessary overspray while making it harder to achieve consistent coverage.

The aim is to find a comfortable working distance that allows you to maintain controlled coverage throughout the treatment.

Watch Your Speed

Your movement matters too.

Moving extremely slowly can deposit more solution onto the skin, while moving too quickly may leave you with inconsistent coverage.

Try to develop a consistent rhythm.

As you become more experienced, your application should start to feel repeatable rather than different with every client.

Don't Ignore Your Equipment

If your spray gun isn't performing the way it normally does, investigate it.

Product build-up, incorrect assembly or equipment that hasn't been maintained properly can affect performance.

Cleaning and maintaining your professional equipment should be part of your routine — not something you only think about when there's a problem.

Consistency Creates Confidence

Professional spray tanning isn't about applying as much product as possible.

It's about control.

Your solution, equipment, technique and knowledge all work together to create the finished result.

The more consistent your setup becomes, the easier it is to identify when something isn't quite right.

Because sometimes improving your spray tan doesn't require changing your solution — it requires understanding your gun.
