A flawless spray tan can be beautifully blended across the entire body - but if the hands and feet are too dark, patchy or heavily sprayed, they can instantly give the tan away.
Hands and feet require a slightly different approach to the rest of the body. As a professional artist, learning how to control your product and placement in these areas can completely elevate your finished result.
The skin on the hands, wrists, ankles and feet can grab tan differently, particularly around knuckles, nails and drier areas.
The biggest mistake? Treating them like any other area of the body.
Your goal isn't necessarily to directly spray these areas until they match the body. Instead, you want a soft mist of colour that creates a seamless transition.
Before you begin spraying, apply barrier cream to particularly dry areas and anywhere you don't want excess solution to collect.
Pay attention to:
You don't need a heavy layer - just enough to prevent these areas from grabbing too much colour.
Client positioning makes a huge difference.
Instead of having your client hold their hands completely flat, ask them to create a gentle claw shape with their fingers.
This exposes the creases around the knuckles and helps you avoid pale lines appearing when they move their hands after the appointment.
Hands don't need the same amount of solution as larger areas of the body.
Rather than spraying directly and closely, move your spray gun further away and allow a light mist of solution to fall over the hands.
A soft criss-cross motion can help distribute the mist without oversaturating the skin.
Less is more here.
One of the easiest ways to spot a spray tan is a visible line around the wrist.
Your hand application should blend naturally into the arm rather than looking like two separate areas.
After spraying, check the wrist from every angle and make sure there are no obvious lines or areas where solution has gathered.
Just like hands, feet generally need much less product.
Allow the overspray from the legs to create some of the colour before lightly misting over the tops of the feet.
Be particularly careful around the toes, ankles and heels where product can easily build up.
A Lusso Tan Professional Blending Brush can be one of the most useful tools in your kit for finishing hands and feet.
Once you've finished spraying, lightly blend around the wrists, knuckles, ankles and toes to soften any areas where you've noticed excess solution.
You're not trying to remove the tan - you're simply perfecting the transition.
Before your client leaves, gently wipe over their fingernails and toenails to remove any excess guide colour.
It's a tiny final step, but one that makes your service feel much more polished.
When it comes to hands and feet, more solution doesn't mean a better result.
Your technique should be light, controlled and intentionally blended.
Perfecting these small details is what takes a spray tan from looking good to looking professionally applied - and they're often the details your clients notice most.
