Spray Tanning During Pregnancy: What Every Spray Tan Artist Should Know

Pregnancy doesn't mean your clients have to give up their glow - but as a spray tan professional, it's important to make their appointment feel comfortable, considered and tailored to them.

From changing skin to increased sensitivity, here are a few things to keep in mind when spray tanning pregnant clients.

Always Check Before the Appointment

We recommend that pregnant clients check with their midwife or healthcare professional before booking a spray tan, particularly during the first trimester or if they have any individual concerns.

As the spray tan artist, you should also carry out your usual consultation and patch testing procedures and follow the guidance provided for the professional solution you're using.

Pregnancy Can Change the Skin

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the skin, meaning a client's usual spray tan may develop slightly differently than it did before.

Skin may become drier, more sensitive or react differently to DHA, so managing expectations and carrying out a thorough consultation is key.

Comfort Comes First

As your client's pregnancy progresses, standing for long periods or moving into certain spray tan positions may become uncomfortable.

Adapt your technique where needed, allow additional time and encourage your client to tell you if they need to sit down or take a break. A luxury appointment should always feel relaxed - never rushed.

Think About Ventilation

Good ventilation is an important part of any professional spray tanning environment, but it's especially worth considering when treating pregnant clients.

Ensure your spray tan area is well ventilated, minimise unnecessary overspray and follow the correct application procedures for your equipment and solution.

Don't Forget Aftercare

Give your client clear aftercare advice before they leave. Encourage gentle showering, regular moisturising and avoiding harsh exfoliation to help their colour fade evenly.

And remember: fake tan does not provide sun protection. Clients should continue to use appropriate SPF when exposed to the sun.

A Little Extra Care Goes a Long Way

Pregnancy can be a time when clients particularly appreciate feeling confident and cared for. A beautiful spray tan before a baby shower, maternity shoot or special occasion can be a lovely part of that.

Take the time to consult, adapt your service and make your pregnant client feel completely comfortable throughout their appointment.

Great spray tanning isn't just about the final colour - it's about the experience you provide along the way.
